AG SMARTER.

“A lot is happening while working and managing a dairy farm, and a producer cannot always watch the markets. They need to lean heavily on somebody monitoring the markets and knowing what is happening. I love being that person for people.”

Trevor stays aligned with clients by tracking dairy markets.

As a fourth-generation dairy producer on his family’s California dairy, Trevor Slegers is well-versed in the ins and outs of milk production operations. However, his lingering curiosity about what happens after milk leaves the farm led him down a unique career path.

Slegers is a risk management advisor working for Ever.Ag’s Dairy Risk Management division. He began his career with Rice Dairy in 2013 after graduating from college; Rice Dairy is now part of Ever.Ag. His role had him working on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade.

He worked with commercial clients for six years, helping buyers manage risk. In 2019, Slegers looked to move back home and help manage his family’s dairy in California – and hopefully continue working for Ever.Ag.

His next opportunity came at a perfect time.

“I could more easily continue my work for Ever.Ag and my family dairy. It turned out to be beneficial. A lot of my clients are in really close proximity to where I live. It allows me to be boots on the ground for Ever.Ag, and I’m part of the local community,”

Balancing both roles

Around the time Slegers returned to California, the USDA launched the Dairy Revenue Protection (DRP) program. The program allowed Slegers to focus on risk management from the producer’s perspective.

“I could more easily continue my work for Ever.Ag and my family dairy. It turned out to be beneficial. A lot of my clients are in really close proximity to where I live. It allows me to be boots on the ground for Ever.Ag, and I’m part of the local community,” Slegers said.

Today, Slegers balances both roles – managing daily operations and employees at his dairy and heifer facilities while also focusing on the markets and his clients after the markets settle for the day.

New market challenges every day

One thing that is certain about Slegers’ job is that every day is different when it comes to markets. He enjoys watching the shifts in trading from day to day and even from morning to afternoon. The changes that result from the markets are what he continues to learn from every day.

“Being able to relay information back to my clients on market activity is something I pride myself on,” Slegers said. “If a producer is looking to get coverage at a certain price, I like being able to watch the market for them, and then call them and say – ‘the price hit your target today. Let’s go ahead and get some coverage.’ And then have that coverage be beneficial to them.”
